JUNE 24th WASHINGTON DC, —- Today 6c01 ANC Commissioner Keith Silver announced plans to “chain himself to the Historic Tree .. in an attempt.to “Stop the Bull Dozers and Chain Saws” to “allow and give the DC Government and Impacted Communities proper and ample time to analyze and study the issues”
Silver stated, “I am asking All Concerned Citizens and Historic Preservationists, to move as quickly as possible during this 15 day window” to allow this city ample time to properly weigh the ramifications of surgically removing this treasured piece of history”
Silver stated, “…believe it or not, I do not look forward to standing before a Bull Dozer or Chain Saw, however, at this point, in this 15 day window (…and counting) this community and city… has no options, to allow us to HOPEFULLY, to get a reprieve… to further allow the community and this city to weigh in “yea or nay”..
Commissioner Silver continued ….” Moreover…the additional Issue is “… the Home Rule Charter is being trampled and stomped upon!!” this City, the impacted communities and Residents, most certainly… have a voice on this Historic Issue”
Silver moreover cited the lack of the ‘spirit of Corporate Responsibility by the Paramount Group and Urban Forestry” to “even consider chopping done this tree” without public discussion, debate, and dialog, is at the very least is incomprehensible.
Commissioner Silver cited a partial listing of the reasons he will “chain himself to the Historic Tree” at least …UNTIL COMMUNITY DISCUSSIONS…(partial listing) are:
(a) the Tree is the “Oldest Tree” and “Tallest” in that block and quite frankly for all practical purposes, may be the oldest in this Single Member District 6C01
(a) (i) tree is older than 100 years old
(b) Less than 500 yards, is 2nd Baptist Church, Noted Designated and Identifying Landmark as Official Site of the Underground Railroad, additionally noted for Fredrick Douglass visits in the Civil War Era, and Adam Clayton Powell Visits in the Modern Day Civil Rights era of the 1950’s.which still serves this day as a Beacon of Light of Hope in this same community, along with Mt. Camel, Bibleway, and Mt Airy Churches all located within a 1/4 mile radius.
(b) (i) This same geographical area, in the Civil War Era, is historically noted and documented as the location as the location where many runaway slaves housed by Abolitionists, lived, worshiped, worked and tarried in this Single Member District as they walked in the daylight hours 1/4 mile to help build the US Capitol and other Landmarks in this City.
(c) Less than 1/4 mile away at 11th and K St. N.W. is Ashbury Methodist Church, established in 1848 and is properly Landmarked as the longest standing African American Church and house of Worship,…in one Location.
(d) Less, than a Mile away, At the 15th St Presbyterian Church at 15th and New York Ave. the still have the original “hitch post” Abraham Lincoln tied his horse to …when we went to Church Services
Commissioner Silver, stated his disgust, that
“PARAMOUNT GROUP and URBAN FORESTRY ADMINISTRATION,… HAS THE CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY TO HOLD UP ON …THE REMOVAL OF THIS TREE …. THE INJUSTICE TO REMOVE SUCH A RICH, VITAL PART OF THE HISTORY OF THIS SINGLE MEMBER DISTRICT, 6c01, AND OF THIS CITY, AND QUITE FRANKLY OF THIS NATION, “… WITHOUT COMMUNITY HEARINGS OR DIALOG” TO ALLOW CONCERNED CITIZENS THE OPPORTUNITY TO WEIGH IN EITHER WAY, WILL NEGATIVELY PORTRAY … EACH OF THEIR ROLES, IN THE HISTORY OF THIS SINGLE MEMBER DISTRICT 6C01, …THIS GREAT CITY, AND MOREOVER …THIS NATION!!
Commissioner Silver urges all concern citizens in favor of “Saving this Historic Tree” or those in favor of “Cutting it Down” located at 425 Eye Street N.E. to contact him at silverk1[@]ymail.com within the next Ten (10) Days to determine what should be done in this 15-day window.
