Obama and race relations

Oliver Willis links to McClatchy and comments:
Will Obama shatter negative stereotypes of black men?

NO PRESSURE AT ALL, JUST REVERSE 200+ YEARS OF INGRAINED RACIAL STEREOTYPING WHILE ALSO RUNNING THE FREE WORLD. NO BIGGIE. SOLVE CANCER IN YOUR SPARE TIME. Jesus.

Charlie Rangel once quipped that Bush had single-handedly destroyed the myth of white supremacy. There is something to that. Day after day, after day, after day, the world was treated to the spectacle of a malevolent fool destroying a country and bringing the rest of the world down with him.

By contrast for the next four years, and very likely eight, we will be treated to the sight of a graceful and well spoken gentleman presiding over a world power. Even for those such as myself, who take a very cynical view of Obama, and consider him to be the American version of Tony Blair (with Soros and Whitney Tilson in the role of Mudoch), there is an undeniable sense of relief as America and the world gains a President as opposed to whatever we have had for the past eight misspent years.

Congratulations to President Obama and the people of the US of A.

As a foreigner who wants good things to happen in any and all parts of the world, I wish Americans will work more in harmony with their president. How successful Obama can be as American president will depend on how well his fellow-Americans can rein in their demands for their expectations to be satisfied.

    Keep the hopes alive.
