Moment of truth for Mormons

Signing for Something

We do not believe it just to mingle religious influence with civil government, whereby one religious society is fostered and another proscribed in its spiritual privileges, and the individual rights of its members, as citizens, denied.” (Doctrine and Covenants Sec. 134:9)

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Sign for Something is a diverse group of members and friends of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) united in their desire to speak their conscience on the matter of civil marriage. We each have our own views on this issue, but we stand united in the belief that each individual should have the civil right to marry the spouse of their choice and to have that union recognized by civil authorities. This runs contrary to the LDS church’s current policy, which asks its members to actively work toward making marriage between one man and one woman the only legal option. Our goal is to empower members of the LDS church in sharing their views and making political decisions for themselves.

The Constitution of the United States of America assures us that no person or group’s religious views are allowed to be binding on the public. It is vital that members of our society be able to express themselves according to the dictates of their own conscience and work to forestall enactment of laws and amendments that would reverse this capacity for any segment of the population.

We are dismayed at the dilemma of choosing between the voice of our conscience and the advice of our church’s leadership on this issue. For each of us this conflict works out in a different manner. Many of us feel there is enough freedom in our church that we may speak our convictions on this matter boldly. Others among us choose a path of anonymity, carrying our convictions about this quietly and expressing them to few. Others of us, feeling that we cannot speak freely on this and maintain our status as church members, have chosen to resign. We welcome all voices, no matter which path they choose.

It may be that you disagree with our conclusions about civil marriage. If that is the case, we welcome you here as well. Our values demand of us the honesty of allowing dissent from our agenda. Your thoughtful input and compassionate advice can only help us continually reevaluate our position as we learn and grow.

Invite your friends to join Sign for Something. Make a difference on November 4.

IF YOU DISAGREE WITH US

Sign for Something is a grassroots organization dedicated to empowering the voice of members and friends of the LDS Church who support civil marriage rights. As such we do not collect letters in support of the current political stance of the leaders of the LDS Church regarding civil marriage. We respect the right of every individual to speak according to their conscience. If you are in agreement with the LDS Church’s current campaign to change the Constitution of the state of California we suggest you follow the First Presidency’s advice to contact your “local Church leaders [who] will provide information about how you may become involved in this important cause.”
