I call on the moderators of the upcoming presidential and vice-presidential debates to rise above the abysmal questioning that dominated this season’s primary debates. Those debates featured questions focused on campaign gaffes, political tactics, and issues of personality that had little or nothing to do with the challenges facing the next president. The American public deserves debates that will focus on the issues that are impacting their lives and shaping their children’s future.
These debates are the public’s best opportunity to learn about the candidates’ ideas, proposals, and interpretations of current events — but only if the debate moderators make substantive discussion possible.
