Health Care Forums in Colorado

First of 4 forums to examine health care
Dr. Anne Courtright, a retired psychiatrist, spoke about “single-payer” health-care proposals, one of which is in a proposed bill by U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., now awaiting more sponsors in Congress. His proposal would provide universal health care, financed by the government similar to Medicare.

The U.S. government already spends as much per capita on health care as most industrialized nations, she said, “yet our health-care system is ranked 37th in the world” because so many Americans are unable to access the excellent health care that is available.

“About 30 percent of health-care dollars don’t go to health care, but to administration and marketing,” she said. “The insurance companies have more and more staff to try to avoid paying for people who are ill. Their CEOs make salaries of $1 million to $7 million plus large stock options. That is obscene.
